O'Grady's father was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. Her family was from Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. Before moving from Illinois to Los Angeles, she appeared in commercials for a number of companies. O'Grady's career began as model and actress for commercials with Montgomery Ward. She was a part of the romantic comedy film called She's Having a Baby. She was later a regular in ABC Drama China Beach with Dana Delany. In addition to guest-starring on different shows and appearing in independent films as well as made-for television movies, she also appeared as the main character in several television programs. Her debut role on television was as Donna Abandando on the ABC police series NYPD Blue. Her role as the tall, blonde secretary of the squad was performed from 1993 to 1996. In each of those years she won the Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance of a Drama Series. The ensemble and O'Grady were awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance by a Drama Series Ensemble in 1995.
